University oriented Preparation - 08-02-2006, 12:03 PM

Here are the lists
  • Ministry of Education (MOE)
  • Institute of Medicine (IOM) & TU affiliated College
    B. P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS)
  • Kathmandu University (KU)
  • Indian Embassy
The most important factor in the campaign for the MBBS Entrance Examination is the adjustment of the one's style of study according to which exam is coming ahead! It doesn't in any way mean that the study should only concentrate on the following examinations. The time of the study should be divided into different subjects though proportions of the time for the subjects can vary. However the study should focus the pending entrance examination that will decide your preparation's speed as well.

Before starting the discussion for the individual topics, it is better to emphasize that the objective for each exam is, first of all, to test the completion of the basic theory. The science as it should have been covered in a vast manner before any of the entrance examination must be through. And the English should also be quite a bit done as these are very much important in every examination and each and every mark counts. There is no excuse for not being able to solve any question simply because it isn't covered in the syllabus of a particular entrance examination.

A change in certain pattern can considerably put into distress an examinee. So better not take a risk. Whatever the University or Institution or Embassy you are applying demands your command in the subject matter. Once it is mastered, you will find yourself everywhere. Then, your job is to choose where to study. After all the dedication is what is required.
[break=Ministry of Education]
Ministry of Education (MOE)

The examination in the MOE is always a good example of a pressure-cooker situation. The one who stands out cool and brave is favored the most though there is always the risk-benefit tug while appearing in the examination due to the provision of the negative marking for the wrong answers. This is the point that makes the students to have fever with chills and rigor.

First appearance in this entrance make you feel what you know and what you don't. There is high probability of failure when guessing the answers. And for this what one has to do is the intense study of the sciences and English. The study of the English is sufficient through the study for the entrance of IOM. It is always better to review the past questions and the similar questions. For the sciences the study of the big books such as Dinesh, Pradeep or Megha should be sufficient if well practiced and more importantly if the theory or text of the chapters has been reviewed time and again or have a good command over the text. In the situations of the near-by exams the course of study of the T.U. can be taken as the reference to the revision and this certainly helps though the questions have been found deviated.

In the examination, one should be clear of what is written in the question as one should always be in any examinations and giving respect to the first thought that always helps in answering the ambiguous questions (provided the examinee has more than average preparation for the exam). The questions can be as simple as the ‘longest part of the frog's gut' to the numerical that takes almost five minutes in Physics and Chemistry. So, one shouldn't be thinking that the question might have been the other way if it is too simple. Answers should be ticked according to the merit and leaving the questions alone is only to be done when you think that you haven't prepared the portions, as you would have liked. Still the common sense prevails and the last second too counts. So, again it is important to know what you know and what you don't.

The time distribution should be perfect. The marks carried by the subjects are similar though it doesn't mean that the time preference should be similar. A well-prepared examinee can manage his/her time by applying less time for the subjects like Zoology, Botany, English and this time can be used in the subjects like Physics, Chemistry. This doesn't mean the requirement of haste in the prior mentioned subjects but it is the reality that the questions of the MOE are prepared in such a way that the time required by these subjects is less. The good look at the questions in the very beginning and time calculation accordingly is all that may be required by the examinees. The most important consideration is that no problems should be read in hurry and ticked in haste. This will leave the examinee in regret and can also miss the scholarship due to such blunder. The management of time is dependent on the prior practices and the model examinations. And it is successfully conducted if one has had a good study prior to the examinations.

So Ministry of Education Entrance Examination requires the similar intensive study of the science as others and now English also plays important part. But largely the presentation of one's psychic strength has high role in the examination that one goes +0.5/-0.5 for each wrong answer and this is all that matter whether you are among the MBBS seats/not. Sometimes the reflex can be credited and sometimes this is can be horrendously wrong. But in such aspects, the preparation days become very important.

The preparation always requires highlighting whatever is required and noting them in a copy can help because these notes which are repeated many times get imprinted on the mind and one can actually remember the written words while appearing the exam. Hence the confidence of answering increases and that is required in the MOE entrance exam. Solving each question through remembrance of the words or sentences or pages or hand writing is more important than using the reflex when there is negative marking system and confidence with which one can answer is all that is required.

As far as material is concerned, the science you study in your intermediate level and a set of objective books are enough. But the questions are from the very deep-seated texts that need quite a compressive study and cognitive approach. The English is enough from what you prepare from the IOM entrance examination. STUDY ! STUDY !! STUDY !!!
[break=IOM & TU affiliates]
Institute of Medicine (IOM) & TU affiliated College

IOM has been the dream institute of medicine to study in. Actually, it is the Maharajgunj Campus that enrolls the students for Medicine. The Institute of Medicine is the Medical wing of Tribhuvan University .
So, the IOM is the Subset University of TU. TU itself is the oldest university of Nepal and IOM (Maharajgunj Campus) is the pioneer institute in the medical field. Therefore, there is enough reason to dream there and that's why it has been toughest to be there through the vigorous competition. The institute takes entrance examination each year just before the Dashain i.e. Bhadra/Aswin. The fresher gets just the time to manage there if they have good concept in their school life and thorough through their college texts. You need to have best of the following trio in the entrance examination of IOM. The competitors are increasing by 1000 or so each year. Get prepared, this is one of the competitions one should feel and face with full fledged of zeal, vigor and enthusiasm.

Science
The IOM entrance always requires the study of all the topics in the science in detail. But one shouldn't be worried that all the content be remembered. As one chapter is finished, the quantity of the content that can be remembered is all that is required for the Institute of Medicine Entrance Examination . The better questions of IOM are the tricky, conceptual and short. So, get better acquainted with them. The overall weight age of the science is One Third i.e. 50 Marks. Though the course is vast and you have to work hard the portion that science carries in IOM is relatively less. But the questions that are asked are quite good. You should focus to the conceptual part and tricky sections. The materials preferred are:
  • The texts that you have studied in the Intermediate level are extremely important. These are not only important from the examination point of view but also from the point of view of easiness to prepare. The books once read are better understood in the second and third time. So, get stick to them.
  • The past questions are the guiding points. Put at your tip of the tongue. Study the chapters from which the questions are frequently asked. They just pull you towards the domain of the science favorite to the institute/university.
  • The hand outs, photocopies and notes you make are the handy materials that are essential to revise the course.
  • The objective books should be by your side. The objectives that are good to use are all get published from India . So the standard cannot match with us. Focus to the area that important for you. Don't enter into the things that are not asked in the entrance examination of Nepal . That will only mislead you. One of the best qualities of good competitors is also to know what is needed for him/her.
  • Any other texts/guides/objective books that you can find reader friendly is preferred. Don't gather too many materials get confused.
English
The English is much ado in the Entrance Examination of IOM. This has been very conflicting if we analyze. May brilliant students in science has not been able to be there simply because they little weak English. But for many it has been catapult to be there.

The one third of all the marks of IOM is from English. It is good paper to prepare and if you have good English, you are most likely to be there. This is really big fish. MOE has also incorporated the English recently. English is invariably what should be crucial, and the study of the TOEFL Books for the Structure English is sufficient. Here is the most important thing in a student who must always remember the structures of Grammar and the basic use of the prepositions.

After that, any complex looking structures may not be in fact like that. It is important because in the exam the human nature tend to take the mind towards what one is used to speaking/writing from earlier on. The questions are exactly like that in IOM. One should stick to Principles of Structures even if the mind man takes away from it. One/two questions can be trivial. The preferred material for the English are:
  • TOEFL Books ( Cambridge , Cliff's, Barron's, Arco's)
  • English Books published by the Coaching Centers
  • Intermediate English Grammar ( Cambridge Publication, Raymond Murphy)
  • Old Questions
  • Brush Up Your English (Bharati Bhawan Publication, ST Imam)
  • Read English Newspapers to improve your English
Health
The identity of IOM entrance examination is the paper Health is there. This paper has the one third portion of the entrance examination which is the 100% criteria for the selection.

Though the Higher Secondary Education Board of Nepal has the course on anatomy and physiology of mammal with reference to Human Being and few health related topics, they are not sufficient to cope with the Health Questions of Entrance Examinations of IOM. The health paper needs different approach and different materials to study on.

That's why also you need to attend the coaching classes to get details of them. Few questions are more or less like that of medical aptitude but most of them need your in-depth knowledge. This paper not only asks anatomy/physiology and public health but also contemporary data of health issues and systems.

So, it is very tricky subject and interesting as well. It is generally common sense though the chapters which require special attention should always be thoroughly studied and solved. The past questions and the likewise questions are important since they can be the leading questions that can lead to many threading/subsidiary questions and where the common sense comes into play.

Since the life is tended to be taken to health field, special attention to every health related activities can be helpful to solving some questions which others may not be able to do and these make difference. The books are similar but thinking perpendicular from many questions can bring the required things. The materials helpful for health are:
  • Dr. Krishna Adhikary's Review of Heath Science
  • Ross & Wilson 's Anatomy and Physiology
  • Park's Textbook of Social and Preventive Medicine
  • Health in Figures (published by the Central Bureau of Statistics)
  • Coaching hand outs/photocopies/notes etc.
  • Past Questions
The preparation for the TU affiliated college is same as that of the scholarship quota. The only difference is the less competition. But the examinee must pass the exam i.e. score 50% (75).
[break=BPKIHS]
B. P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS)

The most challenging exams of all as it can be described. The examinees for this examination have to have a vast knowledge of the Science and some of the English and more than working information about the world out of the curriculum (G.K.).

The next thing is to have the medical aptitude and puzzling English. The examination also demands from the examinee to have the good mind workout in almost every questions and hence a very intensive preparation for the examination. Here too the preparation includes mainly the strengthening of the basic concept.

In addition, it requires the very much practice of the questions from (if possible) more than one large book for each subject; and revisions are mandatory since knowing the questions itself is also important and is time-saving in the examination. The saved time certainly helps in solving the Assertions and Reasons. And this makes the difference at last. So the questions that are printed out of the books are mandatory to be solved in the minimum time period. Time management is always a daunting challenge in this entrance examination.

Other factors influencing the entrance examination may be the location and the season which can be troublesome for some who are used to the cooler and less humid climates. So three days prior visit to the place (i.e. Dharan or Biratnagar) can be useful. This helps in adapting to the climate well before the exam and there you will have time to recover from a sudden dehydration or heat exhaustion that one can encounter. One may be in big trouble if s/he experiences these things just before the examinations.

If you are going to appear BPKIHS Entrance Examination, he/she should be concentrating on the general sciences, English and the General knowledge. But hand in hand, the subjects such as "Health Science" should also go on with few more concentration. This preparation for BPKIHS Exam doesn't mean that you are going to come up with the best result in that exam. If you are not reviewing "Health Science", it can later become your greatest pitfall while appearing for the IOM Entrance.

In contrast, if you are giving just one hour a day for ¾ month to Health Science, it means that you also master yourself for IOM Exam while going for BPKIHS. Here, you become a favorable candidate for BPKIHS as well as IOM Entrance Examination. And, the study of Health can also help in BPKIHS Entrance because in this age of uncertainty of questions in the Entrance exams, one or two out of track questions can make the difference.

This doesn't mean that we suggest you to go for odd one out to be there. The simplest/commonest should always be given the first priority. There will not be excuse for the candidates who make the blunders. The materials are of course the extensive science texts and objectives books. They are:
  • Intermediate texts of science
  • Science text of NCERT/CBSE of India
  • Objective Books published from India (Pradeep, Dinesh Publications, OP Agrawal's Objective Chemistry, Sanjeev Gupta's Objective Physics)
  • TOEFL English/SAT Vocabulary/Brush Up Your English by ST Imam/ Coaching center's English
  • Daily Newspaper/BBC Nepali Service/ Health related activities for General Knowledge
  • Coaching Center's Health Science
[break=KU Affiliates]
Kathmandu University (KU)

For all the Nepalese students who have interest in medicine and want to study in KU affiliated medical colleges in self payment scheme, have to appear in the entrance examination taken by KU. Then the examinees are graded as A, B, and C. Then according to their grades, they can choose the college. The colleges also screen the students according to their demand
[break=Indian Embassy & others]
Indian Embassy

Indian Embassy is really tough exam you appear for the MBBS Entrance Exam. The tough numerical and concepts are asked. The candidates have to have really good at science. Otherwise, there is no way to the Indian Medical Colleges. The exam is more or less equal to the standards of India . So the preparation should be similar. The Entrance of BPKIHS and Indian Embassy have somewhat similar standard. Therefore preparation should be parallel. The materials preferred are:
  • Intermediate texts of science
  • Science text of NCERT/CBSE of India
  • Objective Books published from India (Pradeep, Dinesh Publications, OP Agrawal's Objective Chemistry, Sanjeev Gupta's Objective Physics)
  • TOEFL English/SAT Vocabulary/Brush Up Your English by ST Imam/ Coaching center's English (The score itself is not added but the candidate must pass to be qualified.)
Other Embassies and Institutes
Most of them are taken by the Ministry of Education and referred. So the same is the preparation that we discussed in the MOE section and contact individual embassies and institutes.
