HIV status in Nepal till 2005: Total Adult=70000, Adult Prevalence (15-49)=0.55%, Number of Women (15-49) LWHA=15,310 (22%), HIV Prevalence rate in IDUs=32.7%, HIV prevalence rate in sex worker=3.8%, HIV prevalence rate in client of SW=2.1%. The latest U.N. report shows that 65 million people have been infected with HIV since it was first identified 25 years ago. Twenty five million people have died of AIDS.

Eligibility criteria for joining a medical college is vary according to the Entrance Examination you are preparing for. There are various universities organizations and institutes that conduct entrance examination for eligible Nepali citizens. They are:

  • BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences , Dharan Web site
  • Jagadamba Madan Purashkar Guthi Patan Dhoka
  • Indian Embassy Lainchaur Web site
  • Japanese Embassy & Pakistan Embassy
  • Chinese Embassy

Institute of Medicine Maharajgunj Web site

Eligibility:This is 50% of I. Sc., 10+2 or of Equivalent qualification in Biology.
Criteria:This is 100% Entrance Basis. There is neither VIVA nor NEGATIVE Marking.
Time of Exam:Generally the Entrance is conducted at the First or Second Week of Aswin. There is usually one or two weeks before Dashain.
Form Distribution:Usually the form is distributed one month before the Entrance Examination. Obviously, the form is distributed in and around the Month of Bhdara.
Age Limits:The age limit is Twenty-Five Year.
Starting of the Session:The classes start at Mangsir-1 (From the mid of the November)
Exam Format:There are three papers with the weight age of 50 marks each. (For details see Entrance Examinations ) These are the overview of IOM entrance examinatioin: Paper -I English, Paper-II Health, Paper-III Science

Eligibility: For Free Competition seats. You need to have 60% in I. Sc. / 10+2 OR Equivalent in Biology.
For reservation seats (For Female, Janajati, and Dalits): For this stream, the students applying under this category need to have 50% in I. Sc./10+2 OR Equivalent in Biology.
Criteria:70% Entrance, 20% I. Sc. /10+2, 10% S.L.C. NB: It has NEGATIVE marking system. There is deduction of 0.5 for each wrong answer.
Time of Exam:The tentatively Entrance Examination is conducted twice a year. But sometimes the Entrance can be delayed and overlapped. The two sessions of the year are; Chaitra/Baisakh and Shrawan/Bhdra.
Form Distribution:The form is distributed around two weeks to one month ahead of the Examination and Admission form is distributed around one week before.
Age Limits:The age limit has not been clearly stated, Please contact the respective authorities for authenticity.
Starting of the Session:The students qualified or on the basis of ranking are sent to the colleges that ask MOE for the Scholarship in their colleges. So the session depends upon the colleges. The MOE only conducts Entrance Exam and asks application as per the quota that comes.
Exam Format:Physics 15, Chemistry 15, Zoology 15, Botany 15, English 10 (For detail see Entrance Examination )

BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences , Dharan Web site

Eligibility:Candidates who have passed I. Sc, Class XII examination of the 10+2 System, or its equivalent of Higher Secondary Council, with Biology, Physics, Chemistry, and English as their major subjects obtaining at lest 50% marks in the aggregate or these subjects, and are at least 17 years of age on the first of May of the year of admission, are eligible to apply in the MBBS and/or BDS course.

Criteria:There is 100% Entrance Basis.

Time of Exam:July – 1 (In the middle of Asadh)

Form Distribution: The form is distributed One and Half month ahead of the Entrance Examination.

Age Limits:The candidate should be at least 17 years of age by the time he/she appears for the Entrance Examination.

Starting of the Session:Classes begin from: August First (Generally)Exam Format:Science (150), Physics (50), Chemistry (50), Biology (50) (Zoology, Botany, Human Biology), General Knowledge (20), English (20), Aptitude of Medicine (10)

Jagadamba Madan Purashkar Guthi Patan Dhoka


Eligibility:The students scoring 60% or more is eligible to sit for the entrance exam.

Criteria: The top ten students are selected from the entrance conducted by the Guthi. Then they are called for the interview. After that the two candidates are selected.
Time of Exam: The Entrance Examinination is conducted around the Month of Baishakh.
Form Distribution:The forms are distributed around two month ahead of the Exam.
Age Limits: N/A
Starting of the Session: They send the Students selected to the colleges of India . So the session depends upon the colleges they choose.
Exam Format: Science (PCB) 60, Essay in Nepali 20, General Knowledge 10, Interview 10

Eligibility:The candidate applying for, must have 60% in I. Sc / 10+2 OR equivalent level.
Criteria: The criteria of Indian Embassy is 80% Entrance Basis 20% I. Sc/10+2 (Physics, Chemistry, Biology)
NB: There is a paper of English in which a candidate must score 50% to qualify but it is itself not added in the overall Entrance Score.
Time of Exam: Exam is held around the month of August/September.
Form Distribution:Form is distributed in the month of June-July.
Age Limits:The applying candidate should be between 17-22 years of age.
Starting of the Session: Since they send the students in the different colleges of India , the Session depends upon the Indian colleges the students have been given.
Exam Format: Physics 30, Chemistry 30, Biology 30, English 30

Japanese Embassy & Pakistan Embassy
They conduct their own entrance examinations. They will set the following criteria as per their concept. It is advisable to contact the Embassy and get updated about the changes and protocols of the Entrance Examinations under the following headings: Eligibility, Criteria, Time of Exam, Form Distribution, Age Limits, Starting of the Session, Exam Format.

Chinese Embassy They simply ask the candidates from the Ministry of Education. So, this includes the seat of MOE. However, they have taken quite a few times the Entrance Examination by themselves.
