Meigs' Syndrome - 26-05-2007, 10:58 PM

Yesterday's "MCQ of the day" :
Quote:
Meig's triad does not include
a) Ascites
b) Pneumothorax
c) Haemorrhage
d) Rt. sided solid ovarian tumor
The correct answer is c) Haemorrhage
I was taught that Meigs syndrome (not a triad) is defined as a triad of Ascites, Ovarian tumor(fibroma) and Pleaural effusion. Is there pneumothorax in Meigs syndrome?

The correct answers are (b) Pneumothorax and (c) Hemorrhage.

Again pneumothorax?
Where did u read that Meigs' syndrome consists of hydropneumothorax? In 1937 Meigs et al reported 7 cases of fibroma of ovary with ascites and pleaural effusion(hydrothorax) which was published in American Journal of Obst & Gyne.
Meigs JV and Cass JW. Fibroma of the ovary with ascites and hydrothorax: with a report of seven cases. Am J Obstet Gynecol 1937;33:249–266.

Pneumothorax or hydropneomothorax is not a feature of Meigs' syndrome.

Meig's triad does not include
a) Ascites
b) Pneumothorax
c) Haemorrhage
d) Rt. sided solid ovarian tumor
The correct answer is c) Haemorrhage

-----------------------------------------------------

the Ovarian Tumor can be of any side [not just Rt sided]
and it is Pleural Effusion, होईन र,,
well it seems the disagreement in this 'Triad' is inviting an expert's say here, asap..

Re: Meigs' Syndrome - 30-05-2007, 07:22 AM

hey i read that in the cd of ROBBINS BASIC PATHOLOGY,7TH EDITION

but today i read this in answers.com

In medicine, Meigs syndrome, also Meigs' syndrome, is the triad of benign ovarian tumor (fibroma, thecoma, cystadenoma, or granulosa cell tumor), ascites and pleural effusion.[1] It resolves after the resection of the tumor. For reasons unknown, the pleural effusion is classically on the right side.

Because of the presence of ascites and pleural effusions, the differential diagnosis includes liver failure (cirrhosis), congestive heart failure, renal diseases, and metastatic tumors to the peritoneal surfaces. These entities must be clinically excluded

i'll check again and confirm it,
ki kaso???
spcl thanks to
