How can flies flap their wings 720,000 times an hour (200 times a second) without incurring noticeable wear and tear? The British popular science magazine Focus (December 2005) has the answer: resilin, a protein that enables other insects to make giant leaps without injuring themselves. Scientists from the Commonwealth Science and Industrial Research Organisation in Australia have recently managed to synthesize the substance, which is more elastic and durable than any other material currently used by humans. The researchers expect that among other uses, resilin can repair damaged human blood vessels. |
