What we learn extra here in China - 08-06-2006, 11:12 PM

Well guys,
This is some information about what we learn extra here in China that are not taught or learn practically for medical students.
Lets briefly introduce some medical subjects that are not taught in Nepal.
Nuclear medicine is one of the subjects that is benificial in various ways to diagnose and cure the disease. Using the advanced technology like PET, SPECT, PETCT, ECT etc. so many disease are diagnosed and treated. And in big university hospitals like Beijing, Shanghai, Sichuan, zhongshan etc. these are readily available.
Traditional Chinese Medicine is another clinical subject that are taught in the Chinese universities which has a long history and good therapeutic effect. It has its own theory. One of the chapter is Acupuncture. Many paralysed person has become near normal with acupuncture treatment.

Another I don't know whether in Nepal it is common or not, but here CT, MRI, ultrasound is very common. X-ray is done for priliminary diagnosis. But CT or MRI or US is done regularly to definite diagnosis. Also these are readily available. This saves time for patient to be cured quickly and shortens hospital stay.

Another is not the medical subject but the Language. Here every student are taught chinese so that they can easily adapt here. And learning chinese a great fun. Well I think like that. But some think that is the troublesome. Anyway learning a new language means able to communicate to a lot of people, and it is sure a benefit.

Well guys these are some of my experiences here in better studying medicine, some might accept it and some don't. Its up to you.

PET, SPECT, PETCT, ECT

OK now tell me the expanded form of each of the following

CT = COMPUTERISED TOMOGRAPHY

PET = POSITRON EMISSION TOMOGRAPHY

PETCT = ?

ECT = ?

And here is a very interesting question? If any one on earth can answer it than i will give him/her a MARS BAR.

Q. Define a positron?
If u answer this question properly i will give you full marks if you cant answer this question properly than i have got a stick handy !!!

Positron is an elementary particle having the same mass and magnitude of charge as an electron but exhibiting a positive charge. It is also known as antielectron. In 1932, positrons were observed by Carl D. Anderson, who gave the positron its name. The interaction of a positron and an electron results in annihilation. Two gamma photons are given off, 180 degree apart. Each has an energy of 0.511 MeV, the energy equivalent to positron-electron mass. This unique phenomenon of annihilation radiation 180 degree apart is the basis for PET.

In 1932 Carl recorded the historic photograph of a positively charged electron passing through the lead plate in the center of the cloud chamber. The change in curvature of the path on the two sides of the lead plate showed the direction of travel. It was definitely a positively charged particle. Surprisingly, the particle was traveling upward.
Several well known scientists, including Niels Bohr, were very skeptical of this result, but it was soon confirmed when P. M. S. Blackett and G. P. S. Occhialini published their data in the March 1933 Proceedings of the Royal Society. CARL DAVID ANDERSON 7
They proposed that the positron appeared as one of a pair of positive and negative electrons produced when a gamma ray was converted into matter. The positron had a very short life before being absorbed by a collision with an electron, which produced two gamma ray photons of 511 kev energy each.

PETCT: It is the new equipment in which PET and CT are combined so that the diagnosis be more précised more accurately functionally and anatomically.
ECT : It is the abbreviated term for Emission Computed Tomography
