As far as the importance of language in internship is concerned - believe me, you cant imagine learning anything without good communication. Even in nepal, where we can fluently communicate with the patients, many times we misinterpret the patients complaints and its difficult to take complete history. So, without learning the local language of the patients, its the next thing to impossible. So, if you plan to do internship in china, you better learn the language first.

Re: Hsk - 26-02-2008, 02:01 PM

H=hanyu 汉语(chinese)
S=shuiping 水平(standard or level)
K=kaoshi考试(exam)

actually HSK is chinese language proficiency test.
I made mind to take HSK not because I will do internship in china but I think knowing one more language has many benefits and HSK certificate will be proof for the language you have learned.
Befor HSK was divided into three level of basic,intermediate and integrated.
there used to be only a paper exam of making right choice in all three level and only integrated level had speaking or oral test but now the format has changed and cost has also changed.
You will have speaking+writing composition+a paper exam of making right choice in every three level.
I think most difficult is the writing composition i.e. writing paragraph or writing essay.this section really sucks.many foreigners find it very difficult and you cannot score a very good marks in it.
each province has one or more than one HSK center and you can choose any city that you are very near to.
I think I will not have any problem in oral test because I have been speaking chinese since I came china and I practice writing chinese words(at least an hour everyday) daily after class .
I have never appeared HSK before and may be my information will be wrong so your chinese language teacher or foreign affairs office of your college can help you if you are interested consult with chinese teacher.
I hear for those students who read medicine in chinese language it is compulsory to take HSK after completing first year so please share your exam experiences with us and give suggestions to us

remember that
The HSK certificate has a permanent validity, whereas the accompanying test report will only be valid for two years (beginning from the date of the test session)

Re: Hsk - 26-02-2008, 10:32 PM

Well i had given d HSK exam 5 yrs back. at tht time we had to learn chinese for 9 months n then appear for the exam. HSK exam is divided into grammar, comprehension,listening. n then we have to pass in each parts. if we fail in one part we fail d whole hsk exam. then it's d grading system. 3rd level is d passing grade. tht's it i guess.the comprehension n listening is not so tough.it's only the grammar part since u ppl know there r 4 tones n it's quite difficult to remember which one is which. best of luck guys

For medical students those who come to Mainland China in English medium, they can take HSK Basic Examination. But in some medical school it's compulsory to take. And those students who are to study in Chinese medium, they have to take HSK Basic Examination before admission and have to submit their HSK Certificate for admission. Although HSK certificate has a permanent validity, whereas the accompanying test report will only be valid for two years (beginning from the date of the test session) as the certification for them to enter a college/university in China.

Basic Level Exams are held twice a year.
There are three sections for HSK (Basic) as follows:
Sections & Question Number
Listening
1-50
Grammar
51-90
Reading
91-140

Score levels and certificate grades are determined by the total score and the criterion for different grades is as follows:
Certificate Types and Score Levels

C
100-154
B
155-209
A
210-300

Personally I think HSK can't decide your skills on so called preinternship, but Chinese language is VERY VERY important, because dealing with patient is all about by communication and you can't expect every patient (almost all maybe) to speak English and even though teacher might be there by your side while you practice but knowledge grows when you start working & gaining experience on your own. Hope you can do it. Good Luck!

Annually HSK exam is held twice a year. As my memory says, examinations were on April & December last year.
I remember maybe registration opens around a month ahead (just not sure, too old to remember )and have to register before week of examination. Now one can also register online from HSK official website ; CLICK HERE
