Six Month Day, Night at Poles

Why do the north pole and the south pole have 6 months of daylight and 6 months of darkness? How can there be only one sunrise and sunset each year, not day? I heard that on the first day of fall, there are twelve hours of daylight and 12 hours of night. Please help.

The Egyptians were the first people who created a twenty-four hour day. Time was a little bit different in those days.
