Toenail fungus? - 25-05-2007, 11:39 AM

I'm looking for advice toward my problem I have with the toenail on my big toe. What happened is I had a ingrown toenail, and once I had that removed, ever since then I have a fungus on my toenail. Basically the nail is lifted from the skin, and not attached to the skin at all, except at the bottom of the nail. The skin underneathe the nail is very rough. Does anybody know any good treatments. Ihave searched the web, and found numerous medications, but I am not sure what works and what is safe? Any treatments that might work? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have not come across such till now but may be the nail bed is infected or damaged because of trauma.

May be some expert in Xenomed will give an opinion. Is it possible to post photo of the lesion.

You may also see a dermatologist for the problem.

your problem seems to me like the similar ones i had seen in 'minor operation day clinics' & yes as you have said it seems to me a case of 'toe nail fungus' as well; the infected nail needs removal in addition to an aseptic cleaning of the nail bed & covering the wound for a week with dosage of antibiotics & analgesics as needed, followed by a consecutive day dressing..
this can be performed in 'general surgery' day clinics as a minor operation; what i suggest you is to go to hospital in 'general surgery OPD'..

Secondary infection should be managed with ANTIBIOTICS, but antifungal agents such as nystatin or tolnaftate solution helps this patient. Complete avulsion or modified Zadik's procedure may provide the best chance for eradication.

I suggest you to visit dermatologist. By your history it seems chronic, but the history only is not enough to diagnose. Also if you have tried any medicine and the result is negative its better to visit specialist. I suggest you to have an aseptic cleaning and topical medicine first. Well you might be confused which drug to select. For that you should visit clinic and diagnosed by specialist. From the internet you can search the medicine but don't try to make yourself a guniea pig. Those information you can use for your choice of treatment, but discuss with the specialist for about doses. Its very important because same medicine with different dose have different effect. If it is not curable from medicine then as Graduate06 said, visit general surgery department and remove the diseased tissue.
