xenoMED family is proud to announce that Mati has been selected for for being February Staff Members of the Month at
Journal of Young Investigator.
Matiram Pun, “Mati,” is in his final year of medical school at the Institute of Medicine of the Tribhuvan University in Nepal, Himalayan Kingdom of South Asia. He will graduate in spring 2008 with a Bachelors degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBBS). He has already completed a Bachelor degree in Chemistry and plans to do a thesis for a Masters in Sociology and Anthropology from the same university. Mati did his primary schooling in the hilly districts of Nepal, his high school education in the city, and his higher education in Kathmandu.
Mati has a special interest in mountain medicine and high altitude physiology. He joined Mountain Medicine Society of Nepal (MMSN) in 2003 and currently holds the post of Secretary in the society. He has led journal club, organized seminars, and presented papers, as well as shared high altitude experiences in numerous national and international high altitude seminars. He recently led a high altitude health camp for the pilgrims in a Nepal Himalayas in a sacred lake, Goshainkund, at an altitude of 4380m. He was an important research team member for an internationally recognized research expedition on Mount Everest – Caudwell Xtreme Everest in spring 2007 (see Caudwell Xtreme Everest). In the fall of 2007, Mati spent one and a half months in Khumbu (Everest) region for a drug trial on altitude sickness. Aside from research, he enjoys trekking in altitude, photography, and reading medical research papers.
Mati has been involved a number of other medical student journals like Student British Medical Journal (Advisor), Nepal Journal of Neuroscience (Student Editor), McGill Journal of Medicine (External Editor) and six month back he has been appointed as Assistant Editor for Journal of Nepal Medical Association (JNMA)- a pubmed indexed and official journal of Nepal Medical Association (Professional organization of Nepalese Doctors). He has a passion for clinical research, critical appraisal, publications, and medical research article editing. Mati is currently the advisor and one of the concept designers of the first and largest online medical community/forum from Nepal –
www.xenomed.com. He plans to lead career in clinical research.
Mati joined JYI as an Associate Editor in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences Department in January 2006 and continues to enjoy the responsibility. He is very thankful to Prof Dr Buddha Basnyat (one of the leading researchers in Mountain Medicine and High Altitude Physiology) for his inspiration, guidance and opportunity for the altitude research and other opportunities and, of course, his friends and family members for their exceptional support and guidance over the years. Mati would also like to thank his JYI colleagues for their wonderful cooperation and teamwork, and he looks forward to being a part of JYI for years to come.
Though Heather and Mati play very different roles as JYI staff members, both have been critical in the maintenance and promotion of the Journal. JYI is extremely grateful for the work they have done.
