Introduction
The AMC examination is a screening examination to establish that doctors trained in medical schools that have not been formally reviewed and accredited by the AMC have the necessary knowledge and clinical competence to practise medicine with safety in the Australian community.
The standard of the examination has been set at the level of attainment of knowledge and clinical skills corresponding to that of newly qualified graduates of Australian medical schools who are about to commence intern training, as this is the entry point for medical practice in Australia.
Eligibility
To be eligible to sit the AMC examination you must:
- Primary degree in medicine and surgery (MBBS) issued by a medical school listed in the World Health Organisation (WHO) publication World Directory of Medical Schools, or other publications approved by the Council. (Degrees in traditional Chinese medicine and the Degree of Doctor of Osteopathy (awarded in the USA) are not recongised in Australia).
- AMC requirements for English Language Proficiency (IELTS).
Current Regulations On Resident Status
As of 21 July 1999, the Australian Medical Council does not require candidates to have permanent resident status or hold Australian or New Zealand Citizenship in order to apply for, sit and complete the AMC examinations.
Exam Schedule
Exams are conducted twice each year, expected dates are in May (closing date March) and October (closing date August).
Components
The AMC examination consists of:
- Multiple-choice-question (MCQ) examination
- Clinical examination.
- A candidate must pass the MCQ examination before proceeding to the clinical examination.
The AMC sets a pass mark for the MCQ examination which is based on the level of knowledge required by Australian Medical Schools for their final year graduates.

A multiple-choice question (MCQ) test administered in two three-hour papers of 100 questions each.
Format of the Clinical Examination
A clinical examination, the general objective of which is to evaluate the clinical competence of the candidate in terms of medical knowledge, clinical skills and professional attitudes for the safe and effective clinical practice of medicine in the Australian community.
Application procedures- Complete and return the Preliminary Application Form for the AMC Examination and the assessment fee.
- The AMC will send you a copy of the Information Booklet for Candidates and the necessary application forms.
- Complete the forms, using the instructions provided and return them to the AMC.
- New candidates must submit all documentation prior to the closing date for the MCQ examination. New candidates must be assessed as eligible to undertake the AMC examination process prior to being scheduled to sit the AMC MCQ Examination
