KATHMANDU, May 4 - Unidentified gunmen have shot and injured Kathmandu Medical College (KMC) principal and prominent child specialist, Dr. Hemang Dixit Thursday morning.
Two assailants who came on a motor bike shot at Dr. Dixit at Baneswor Height, at 9:30 as he was going to his relative's place, Police quoted eyewitnesses as saying.
Dr. Dixit has sustained bullet injuries in the neck and was rushed to KMC where he is undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). He is reportedly out of danger.
According to the District Police Office DSP Ganesh KC, the unidentified gunmen had followed Dr. Dixit's car and fired twice, two kilometers away from his residence.
“There was some rattling sound at the back, as I turned to see what it was, Dr. Dixit was already covered with blood,” Dr. Dixit’s driver Raja Ram Timsina said.
Timsina further said that he had taken Dr. Dixit to KMC in the doctor’s own directives and could see two people fleeing the site in a motorcycle whom he could not recognize.
Meanwhile, KMC Surgery In charge, Dr. Sunil Sharma has said that Dr. Dixit has bullet wound, other cuts and bruises due to broken glass pieces in five places in his body.
Declaring that Dr. Dixit out of danger, Dr. Sharma further said that the bullet had penetrated into the left of his neck and out from under his right arm.
An unidentified group was demanding a huge sum of money in donation from KMC for a long time now, said a police source.
Police suspect that Dr. Dixit was attacked by the gunmen as the college for denying the donation.
In a similar shooting incident by unidentified assailants few months back at KMC gate, senior doctor, Dr. B.B.S. Rana had fortunately escaped attempt on his life. |
