Re: Medicos halt work at Manipal Hospital - 24-07-2007, 08:15 AM

Thanx khushidr for bringing up the issue....... nd of course for so much of individual details some of which even i was unaware of.

Regarding this case and ur comment - It happens often in Manipal :

i think it happens everywhere that treatment decisions do change - sometimes drastically - in the operating table.
and it was probably the right decision to leave the plates in situ rather than having a broken bone. and this complication of plating probably occurs often in every hospital doing good number of plating.

more serious aspect of this case which u do not seem to have realised is the atmosphere of violence against medical professionals.
was it right in part of patient party to manhandle the treating physicians. even if there was a gross negligence (which in no way was present in this case) is violence justifiable? aren't there proper authorities to take action against those at fault?
and this is a dangerous trend catching up in nepal these days........ be it everest nursing home, butwal hospital, norvic, birgunj, koshi and many more.
nd god forbid someday it may happen to khusidr urself.
this trend of getting compensation by beating physicians and vandalising hoapitals has to be truncated by any means.

khusidr, by saying ......."It happens often in Manipal"...... if u r silently approving this trend -deliberately or by ignorance- u r probably mistaken in ur judgement.

another aspect - of paying hefty money silently

i believe this represents nothing other than the existing atmosphere of fear among hospital authorities nd is a direct consequense of violence against medical instutions and professionals.
it seems more reasonable to pay a particular (hefty) sum of money than to let the hospital be vandalised.
take any similar example and u will see that the hospital has paid everywhere many a times for no reason.
it happened in patan, norvic (nd im not sure - in B & B : the hefty money amounting to in order of crore)
khusidr u seem to ignore this aspect again by blaming just manipal.

number of doctors:

i m not quite sure exactly how many you mean by a very very very limited Doctors.....
but manipal does have quite a lot of faculties, a good nouber of medical officers and interns for its 550 beds nd the existing patient load.
i agree that there had been scarcity of medical officers for few months recently following the formulation of 'chikitsak parichalan nirdeshika ' by the government.
and i also admit my ignorance regarding the standard limits of number of dctors with respect to number of patients so as to lable manipal as running with a very very very limited Doctors.... .

finally

its not just manipal that has to think somewhere...... seriously
its the whole medical fraternity in nepal

idiosyncracies and anaphylaxis etc keep occurring in medical practice and any physician can b a target if the system is such as now.
