Re: Give your thoughts!!! - 28-06-2007, 09:25 AM

I think one of the objectives of Nepal Medical Council is to standerdise the quality of medical field in the country. A person is free to choose his/her college and university after completion of PCL or HSEB and after the required course and compulsory rotatory internship, NMLE is conducted so as to test whether he/she has the basic requirement to practise as a doctor in Nepal. I will not comment here in the quality of the NMLE and impartiality, but still the objective is clear, which is to provide a new doctor with license to practise modern medicine.

I think although there may be many institutions, the governing and licensing body should be single. Just think a few years back, there was only one medical college in Nepal and after private sector started to get involved, within such a short span there are already 10+ colleges and many are coming up; and now already debate has started whether we really need more medical colleges. The situation will be the same if other boards are formed. As Walrus has rightly said, NMC is already heavily politicised and if we even think of other bodies we may have many Medical Councils, maybe one affiliated to Nepali Congress, other to UML, another Young Medical Council affiliated to Maoists and many many other affiliated to Bammorcha, Janamorcha and so forth !!!

My view is : this issue is not something we should ponder and give our thought. But the thought should be how to make our NMC impartial, a true non-political organisation and a council we can be proud of. NMC must be more vigilant in the practices in this field, which means not only clinical practise but ethical practise and social status of doctors. As I have been continuously writing in my other posts, there is lot of corruption in this field, NMC should poke their noses there.
