They say the law is unclear but could mean that if a kidney donor dies, the doctor can be sentenced to five years in prison and fined Rs 500,000. A clause says that if a donor dies within three months of the operation due to psychological trauma or shock, the physician can face life in jail. Because of the Act, many Nepalis have no choice but to go to India for transplants, where they spend Rs 500,000 to Rs 1 million. Doctors say they can do transplants safely but the government has to amend the law before they’ll start operating.
| who are the qualified transplant surgeons of Nepal with proper training? Also there needs to be tranplant nephrologists too. What happened to the doctors who previously attempted and also the patients?? Finance is a huge issue, the transplanted patients need alot of follow up clinics, almost every 2 weeks for the first few months to check the renal function, possible biopsies and side effects of the drugs. Though transplantation is very cost effective in comparison to dialysis, there still needs to be nephrologists and surgeons who can carry on the follow up, and the immunosuppresant drugs are very expensive too, how does the government plan on financing that, it's not right to make the patient pay for it.
i think it's right that the doctor who attempts live donor nephrectomy goes to jail...the patients are healthy individuals and the actual operation is no joke, to subject them to death due to lack of training is wrong.
i think it's fair to say just cause the doctor is an urologist doesn't make him/her a transplant surgeon. i guess this is something to do with Nepal and lack of rules and regulationd and "je gareni hunchha" views!!
