Dr Laxmi V Ghimire wrote an article on Tear gas in StudentBMJ:

the summary:

Summary

Tear gases are not that harmful to most people, but exposure may trigger laryngospasm or bronchospasm in people with pre-existing diseases such as asthma or bronchitis. Allergic contact dermatitis from repeated exposure to chemical based control agents have been identified in both enforcement officers and demonstrators at protests. Not enough studies have been done to understand the toxicological effects of these gases, although recent studies have found CS gas to be more hazardous than previously thought.15 In 1969, 80 countries voted to include tear gases among the agents banned for use in war under the Geneva protocol, but these have been widely used domestically.20 These agents should be used against civilians only when enough studies have been done to show that they are harmless. Otherwise, more will be added to the list for banning these agents, which many national and international organisations have supported already.
