Doing research as a part of the under graduate medical course seems to be the norm. There seems to be not only little projects starting from the pre-clinical years but chances for medical students to intercalate either a BSc degree or a BMedSci by taking a year off.

It's not necessary to so research work as such, and many medical fields don't require the doctors to do so. However, if the person wants a more academic medical job, research is the way to go. It gives an insight into how research work is actually done as well as give you slightly more knowledge into the chosen field.

I'm taking 2006 off to do research, and so far it's the pits!!! it's definitely an insight into how much i'm not going to enjoy this year!
