it might be cheaper to study MBBS in some foreign countries compared to nepal
but certainly that too is not in the reach of poor people nd hence is not an inexpensive alternative to studying MBBS in nepali colleges
besides there are other advantages of opening medical colleges like
production of manpower (as pointed out by mati),
addition of a tertiary care hospital (cheaper than nursing homes and private hospitals) which increases the quantity and quality of health care available to a region,
promotion of medical research at local level,
employement to hundreds of nepalese citizens (indirectly to thousands),
development of locality,
incoming of foreign investment,
national income increases by the tax/fees/expenditure from foreign students,
import of knowledge and skills from teaching staff who come from abroad
etc
and in fact colleges within nepal are the very place where poor people can become doctors....... in the government's scholarship quota the ministry of education sends students in merit basis and in reservation quotas to study MBBS nd this is where poor people get entry into MBBS...........
and in case of foreign investment institutions, they are gonna be handed over to the government after 50 years (MCOMS is already 14 yrs old in paper)
opening of medical colleges is definitely advantageous there should be no skepticism
rather the focus should be laid in maintaining the quality standards in these institutions. |
