Various professional organisations that have been carrying out joint protests against growing attacks and intimidation have called off their protest programmes for the next three days.
According to Dr. Kedar Narsingh K.C, the general secretary of Nepal Medical Association (NMA), the protest programmes have been stopped for three days following assurances by the government and top leaders of various political parties to initiate action against those involved in the abduction and ruthless torture of the managerial staff of Biratnagar-based Nobel Medical College (NMC).
Representatives of various professional organisations including the NMA, Nepal Bar Association and Nepal University Teachers Association had met Prime Minister GP Koirala, Maoist chairman Prachanda, UML general secretary Mahadv Kumar Nepal and Speaker Subas Nemwang, requesting them to provide security to professionals.
The professionals had announced protests on Sunday demanding action against the abductors of NMC officials.
Valley in-charge of the Maoist-affiliated Young Communist League, Chandra Bahadur Thapa ‘Sagar’, on Monday had publicly apologised for ‘mistakenly’ abducting and torturing Dr Gyanendra Giri and a few other NMC officials.
Demanding immediate action against the YCL men involved in the incident, professional organisations affiliated with the Professionals Alliance for Peace and Democracy (PAPAD) had staged an hour-long sit-in at the main gate of Singha Durbar on Monday. They were to organise various protests throughout this week. -
