Facts and figures - high blood pressure

• Worldwide, high blood pressure is estimated to cause around 7.1 million deaths.
• In the US, 1 in 4 adults have high blood pressure.
• A higher percentage of men than women have high blood pressure until age 55; however, from age 55-74 years, the percentage of women is slightly higher; from 75 years onwards a much higher percentage of women than men have high blood pressure.
• The World Health Organisation estimates that approximately 62% of strokes and 49% of heart attacks are caused by high blood pressure.
• African Americans are more likely to have high blood pressure than Caucasians (white race).
