I heard that few Nepalese Medical Graduate had to return back from UK, because their medical college is not listed in World Health Organization (WHO) list. This is neither that medical college is sub-standard nor it is not recognized by Government of Nepal and that doesn't mean it is of poor quality than any medical college who are listed in WHO directory.
The fault lies in the part of Principal or Dean of that college and the management. It is their duty and responsibility to recognize their college to the international database such as WHO directory (only, 9 medical college, listed) which has become AVICENNA Directory for Medicine, now. Beside this there is another directory known as International Medical Education Directory (IMED) at FAIMER (only, 11 medical colleges, listed), particularly those who wish to pursue their career in US.
Because of negligence, poor knowledge and lack of concern from the concerned authority for their graduate, more will suffer in the future, if other medical college do not take action, now. It is because they don't care about their graduate, they are just concerned about getting admission and letting them roam around with uncertain future. Most of the people are just self centered, no matter how high or philosophical words come out of their mouth. Had they cared about them, we wouldn't see people suffering around us.
It hurts, when I see our people suffering because of mere negligence from the concerned authorities. I took the initiation to list Kathmandu Medical College in the WHO list and IMED - FAIMER way back in 2003. Our Principal Dr. Heman Dixit himself was concerned about it. Later, I also helped (provided information) Nepalgunj Medical College when one of their graduate contacted because he was asked for IMED - FAIMER listing while appearing for USMLE.
Partly the faul lies in the system too because the Medical Education Department, is not functioning well. The attitude of medical college is like - medical education department has to be set up for name shake because Nepal Medical Council has made it mandatory. Just like any other specialty like Medicine, Surgery, Medical Education is also one of the most important department in any academic institution. Although they call it medical college, they don't have full functioning medical education department.
Just lets have another scenario, imagine a hospital where, psychiatrist do the operations say for e.g. Cholecystectomy, A Gynaecologist treat psoriasis, A dermatologist is performing cesarean section and an Orthopaedician operating cataract, what do you think, will that hospital perform well? You know the answer.
Similarly, if medical education department is not strengthened, this kind of chaos will always prevail in the medical college.
These medical college may come out with excuses like we don't have man power ! but thats a silly excuse if they can buy old professor from India why can't they do for medical educationist. Why don't they provide opportunities and create environment where a medical educationist could enjoy their knowledge and expertise to improve quality of medical education.
It is unfortunate in our country that most of the medical college have so called medical education department, only. Even the university when curriculum is revised there are less than 1-5% medical educationist, only. Then how can we make sure that curriculum is of outmost standard. The era of "so called" has been out-dated. All the medical colleges should give priority to establish a full functioning medical education department, then only we can see a future of prosperity in medical education system in Nepal.
Why do we need this?
After your graduation, when you apply for further education abroad, they go through these directories and if not listed, they do not proceed your application, further. This is the era of globalization, so you need to be aware of all the future issues and possibilities.
N.B.: Please spread this information to other medical colleges in Nepal, until we have them all in the directories.
